Fire Safety Permit - Annual Mobile Food Vendor / Food Truck Permit Application

As of October 15th, 2024, food trucks have the following additional requirements:

1) N.J.A.C. 5:70-3, 319.10.3 requires that liquefied propane gas (LP-gas) containers and fuel-gas piping systems be inspected annually by an approved inspection agency or a company registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation to requalify LP-gas cylinders. An approved inspection agency includes plumbers licensed pursuant to N.J.A.C. 13:32. The purpose of this inspection is to ensure the system components are free from damage, suitable for the intended use, and not subject to leaking. The approved inspection agency must affix a tag onto the system indicating the name of the agency (including license number) and the date of the satisfactory inspection; and

2) N.J.A.C. 5:70-3, 319.8.5 food preparation vehicles containing LP-gas must be provided with a LP-gas alarm; N.J.A.C. 5:70-3, 319.9.4 food preparation vehicles containing compressed natural gas (CNG) must be provided with a methane alarm. These alarms must be installed in the vicinity of the system components in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Failure to comply will result in denial of permit upon inspection.

Annual Permit Requirements:

  1. Mobile food vendors operating out of Mobile Food Preparation Vehicle shall comply with Section 319 of the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code, or applicable code.
  2. Application for permit for Mobile Food Preparation Vehicles, shall be accompanied by the following items
    • Valid, within 6 months, certificate of inspection of the cooking suppression system
    • Valid, within 6 months, certificate of hood cleaning
    • Valid, within past 12 months, certificate of inspection of fuel-gas piping systems
    • Valid vehicle registration card
  3. The application for an annual permit must clearly state the specific dates and locations the mobile food vendor will be operating.  The annual fire safety permit shall be attached to a specific vehicle or mobile retail food establishment. Vendors with multiple vehicles shall obtain separate annual fire safety permits for each vehicle used. 
  4. Annual permit holder shall submit any changes to the dates and locations to the Fire Marshals office prior to setup.  Failure to notify the Fire Marshals office will result in the revocation of the annual permit.
